When Sri Lanka white-washed South Africa 2-0 at their home in the Test series, everyone said maybe this is the time when Sri Lanka cricket will make a sound comeback in the international arena. But as the ODI series started, that thought became far-fetched. As the series kept going on, it seemed like Sri Lanka’s spirits had come back once again.
When South Africa faces Sri Lanka in the fifth and the final ODI at the Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town on March 16, the visitors would be staring another ODI series loss. As a matter of fact, Sri Lanka has now lost nine straight ODIs in the rainbow nation which includes another 5-0 series whitewash back in 2017.
As far as the Proteas are concerned, they would eye a clean sweep to keep themselves mentally prepared for the World Cup later this summer. Under the captaincy of Faf du Plessis, the hosts have been as professional as ever, managing to dominate all the games in the series so far. Even in the previous game, they bowled out the visitors for just 189 and chased the total under 33 overs.
As cricket fans, the only thing we would love to see will be a fierce battle between two quality sides and not a boring dead rubber.
It should be a flat wicket with the side batting first fancying a score above 300 runs. The team batting first should benefit as the wicket might get slow as the day progresses.
SA v SL 5th ODI Team News
South Africa: Reeza Hendricks had another disappointing outing in the last game and maybe it’s time that the team management drops him finally. In this situation, Aiden Markram would be elevated to the opening slot. Faf du Plessis could move up the order and welcome back Rassie van der Dussen at no. 4 to give the young man a final shot before the World Cup. Other than this, Dane Pretorius might come back as an all-rounder in the side.
Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka’s major problem is the fact that their bench strength is not quite good. Having said that, Angelo Perera could be tried as he has been short of opportunities. Other than this, we can’t expect any more changes in the side which clearly lacks confidence.
